Why You Want to Keep Mice Out of Your House
Mice are destructive little creatures. The last thing that any homeowner wants to deal with this fall is an infestation. Mice bring the risk of disease into your home through saliva and feces. Not only that, but mice can also be incredibly destructive to several spaces in your home. they are constantly chewing on different surfaces to keep their teeth filed down and will start to chew on furniture, walls, and any other hard surface that will help keep their teeth at a manageable length.
Tips to Keep Mice Out of Your Home
There are several things that homeowners can do to make it less likely that they have a mouse infestation this winter.
– Seal Your Home: The first thing you need to do is ensure they can’t get into your home. You need to inspect the outside of your house and seal any holes, cracks or gaps that a mouse could potentially fit through. Keep in mind that a mouse can fit through an opening as small as a dime. Even the smallest spaces should be filled with steel wool or caulking to keep them out.
– Trim Landscaping: When the trees, shrubs and other plants in your yard or overgrown, they provide coverage and a safe haven for rodents. You want to make sure you trim it all back so that they aren’t setting up their nests so close to your home. If you have a stack of firewood, make sure that is being stored at least 20 feet from your home to keep mice away as well.
– Store Food Properly: One of the things that mice will be looking for is food. If you aren’t storing your food, or your pet food properly, it will definitely attract mice to your home. they will even be drawn to bird seed. To keep them away, make sure to store these items in containers that mice won’t be able to penetrate.
– Fix Leaks: Another thing that attracts mice to your home is a water source. If you have any small leaks in your plumbing, they will be attracted by that. Make sure you’re checking for any slow leaks that need to be fixed.
