Reasons Wasps Are More Aggressive Late Summer / Early Fall
When it comes to wasp aggression, you may have noticed that they are even more aggressive in the fall than they have been in the beginning and middle of summer. While wasps are naturally aggressive, that aggression is next level as we move into fall. Here’s why that happens:
– Population: The population of the wasp nests are going to hit their peak during the fall months. They will have been building up ever since the spring. You will see them everywhere because there are so many of them by the end of the summer and early fall.
– Food Scarcity: Wasps actually prefer a diet of protein more than they do nectar. They will feast on other bugs and food scraps to get the protein they need. However, toward the end of summer that switches to nectar as the season ends. The problem is that the flowers are also fading. This leaves wasps on the aggressive hunt for food.
– Colony Breakdown: For many worker wasps, this is the end of their life cycle. It can cause them to feel more aggressive than they normally would, due to the disruption. They will likely be more defensive than they have been previously.
How to Keep Fall Wasps Off Your Property
There are several things that you can do to keep wasps from being attracted to your property during the late summer / early fall.
– Clean up any popsicle, soda, candy or other sweet and sticky spills as soon as they happen. Wasps are looking for sugary food this time of year.
– Make sure your trash cans have tight fitting lids that don’t allow wasps to gain access to your trash. They are highly attracted to it.
– Keep your doors and windows shut if there isn’t a screen there. Wasps will get into your home using the smallest of holes.
– Use a fan in your outdoor areas to keep them from coming in the area.
