Mice Squeeze Through Unusually Small Holes
When it comes to getting inside when the weather changes, mice will stop at nothing. They will be searching for even the smallest of holes and cracks to squeeze their way through. The opening only has to be a quarter of an inch in diameter for them to make it through. It is also important to note that they don’t see well. As they run up against the wall, they leave behind pheromones that let other mice know that this is a place where there is food, warmth and water. This is one of the reasons why people struggle with recurring infestations.
Where to Look for Openings
Mice aren’t going to usually make their own openings. They will crawl through one that is manmade or cracks that have happened due to settling issues. Here are some of the most common places that mice will get into your home. It is a good idea to start looking in and around these areas:
– Laundry Vent: The laundry vent is the perfect place for a mouse to crawl through. They can squeeze easily through this manmade hole.
– Air Conditioning Lines: The holes where the air conditioning lines go into your home is another place that mice will frequently crawl through. Use foam to close up these holes so they can no longer gain access.
– Decks & Patios: Sometimes, there are gaps around decks and patios that will allow mice to get inside your home. They often will nest under these structures as well.
– Under Garage Foundations: Another place that they will frequently nest is under the garage foundation. Make sure you are checking along the bottom of the foundation of your garage for any areas where mice might be sneaking through.
Look in the Night
