Many homeowners struggle to keep mice out of their homes. This is especially true during the winter months. What many homeowners don’t know is that aside from different species, there are differences that set some mice apart from others. Namely, we are talking about urban mice and rural mice. Mice that are found in cities actually behave quite differently from those that are found in the country. Effective Pest Services is here to talk about the differences that we are seeing between these two different types of mice.
How Different Are Urban Mice from Rural Mice?
When it comes to mice, there are several things that can make them behave and act differently. While rural mice used to be more abundant, developments and suburbs have made many of these mice adapt to urban environments. We would like to point out some of the differences you might see when you compare a city mouse to a country mouse, much like the classic children’s story.
– Mouse Species: The types of mice that are found in the country and the city are going to be different from each other. In the country, you will see species like field mice and deer mice. In the city, you will see pocket mice and house mice.
– Mouse Diet: The things that these mice eat will look quite different as well. Rural mice will be eating things like nuts, seeds and berries. All of which can be found naturally in their habitat. Mice that are found in the city will have a diet that consists of foods that humans will eat. There is not much in your pantry that a house mouse of pocket mouse wouldn’t want to eat. This can make keeping these mice out of your house challenging.
– Mouse Behavior: The way that these two types of mice behave is another thing that is differentiates the two of them. Urban mice are much more aggressive than rural mice are. They are used to being around humans and don’t fear them like mice used to. Rural mice see humans as predators and will run at the sight of one.
– Mouse Nests: Rural mice can often be found living underground. They will dig large burrows that are deep underground so that they can stay warm during the winter months. These mice are hardy and can withstand harsher environments. Urban mice aren’t nearly as tough as rural mice though. They build soft nests out of the materials they find inside your house. They can’t survive in cold temperatures which makes them are large threat to homeowners. They will do pretty much anything to get inside when it gets cold.
