Before you know it, summer will be a distant dream and we will be walking through parks with bright red, gold and brown leaves on them. Fall will be here in no time. This means that it’s time to make sure your home isn’t going to allow mice to get inside when the weather takes a turn. There are several things that homeowners need to be doing now, while the weather is still warm, to make sure their home isn’t attracting mice without them realizing it. Effective Pest Services is here to talk about how to avoid a mouse infestation this fall with some preventative measures in place.
How Homeowners Can Ensure Their Homes are Sealed Properly
The best defense against mice for homeowners is to seal the property. You would be shocked at the small opening that mice need to get into your home. Mice can fit through a hole or crack as small as a dime. Here are some parts of your home that you will want to check.
– Windows & Doors: Your windows and doors come equipped with weather stripping to keep the cold weather out during the winter and the hot air out during the summer. As your home age, that weather stripping can become damaged. This leaves gaps that are large enough for mice to squeeze through.
– Foundations: Another common problem is cracks or gaps in the foundation. They can squeeze through these openings as well. You can seal these openings with some heavy duty caulking.
– Attic Vents & Chimney: If you have a chimney, you want to make sure there is a screen in the top that will keep rodents from climbing down it and into your home. Likewise, the vents that keep your attic temperature cooler will need screening as well so they don’t squeeze through those openings too.
– Pipes & Utility Lines: There are pipes and utility lines that go into your home somewhere on the outside. These pipes and lines usually have gaps around them that should be filled in to keep mice out.
Proper Food Storage is Important
Another thing homeowners need to be doing is storing food properly. Eliminating food sources for mice will go a long way in keeping them from getting into your home. Make sure you seal packaging or store your pantry food in plastic containers with tight fitting lids. If you have pets, make sure their food is stored properly as well since mice will not hesitate to eat it. Another thing to keep in mind is trash. Your trash should be stored in a can that has a tight fitting lid that doesn’t allow mice to get inside.
